over 4 years ago – Mon, Jan 20, 2020 at 05:32:12 PM

Here's a sneak peek at the development of the collectors tuck - the artwork is being prepared and to give you an idea of how the box will look.  The overall styling is a white textured paper - the cream areas will be embossed, the dull gold areas will be embossed and then foiled in gold.

More updates soon and let me know what you think.

Now that the card reverse is finished I can reveal the Standard Tuck Design... it is very much in keeping with the first deck with updated imagery and metallic gold ink additions!

Visual showing how the front and the reverse of the deck will look when finished.

Card Backs!
over 4 years ago – Wed, Jan 15, 2020 at 07:07:32 PM

So I thought I'd share a little of the painting process on my painting for the card backs - it's the third day of painting but I wanted to get to a stage where you could envisage the finished look and offer some input.   If you don't want to just skip down to the images below...

I have become fascinated learning about the history of playing cards and their development but most importantly, and like a lot of my other work, their relationship to nature and natural cycles.  A lot of you will be aware of this and there are many articles written but for those who aren't I am fascinated by the following comparisons between nature and the deck of cards in general.

There are 2 colours of cards - red and black - representative of day and night maybe...

There are four suits relating to the four seasons.

Within each suit there are thirteen cards, those who know ancient calendars will know that many calendars followed a lunar cycle.  A lunar calendar has 13 months to the year as there are thirteen cycles in each passing year.

52 cards for the 52 weeks in the year.

Some people talk of cards as relating to the calendar but more importantly they relate to planetary cycles and our observation of the natural world around us.  I wanted the artwork to reflect this but only in a subtle way - dividing the background into light and dark areas through which I can indicate the seasons.  Including the emblems of playing cards, current and past emblems such as swords and literal clubs..

so enough blurb - here are the development pics for the painting I hope you enjoy and I'd love to have your input as the painting develops.  Dopr a message below - anything to make the deck stronger and to include your input - I will try and include as many suggestions as possible but please don't be offended if I don't include yours!

Initial Sketch made using a blackwing pencil on watercolour paper
Adding calligraphy ink using a Kaweco fountain pen - using sepia and turquoise ink... this stage is pretty subtle but the colours get picked up later
getting ready to add teas and alcohol to the sketch and inks
Apllication of tea onto the drawing
The developiong effects of the tea as the colours from the pen bleed onto the page
detailed area showing the tea on paper and running inks - I left this for about 4 hours to dry before starting to add detail
Adding detail to the painting using fountain pens and more of the sepia and turquoise ink. much of this work is crosshatched and is done spontaneuously. If you look close you will see playing card emblems within the features
Current stage of painting

Thanks for taking the time to read!!! I will update progress throughout the week.

Aside from this I am working on the standard deck design which will be in keeping with the 1st edition deck with a few minor changes, and then the elaborate tuck for the collector's edition.

I'm also prepping and beginning the 4 joker card comissions at  which I am really loooking forward to sharing with you.

All the best - Carne
